Lyons was born and raised in Philadelphia before relocating to Florida and attending high school at A.W. 'Last Tuesday, very suddenly, we lost one of our best friends. In the time-honoured way it overstretched on its borrowings during the early-seventies and the oil crisis. By late 1938 and early 1939 Lyons, now ailing, began losing control of the UAP as several potential challenges to his leadership emerged. While speaking to some of his other friends, they all admit they regret not having deeper chats with happy-go-lucky Joe. He was very critical of people with large landholding interests and was in frequent conflict with his employer, the Tasmanian Education Department, for his political activities.
